The AMA is seeking an attorney with at least two years of litigation or political experience to join the Litigation Center of the American Medical Association as a 2020-2021 Health Law Fellow.

The duration of the scholarship for the 2020-2021 academic year runs from August 24, 2020 to May 14, 2021.

The AMA Fellow will have the opportunity to receive $20,000 in the form of:

  • A credit applied directly to tuition fees
  • An allowance paid to the student

The AMA Fellow will be expected to coordinate work hours via remote technology with AMA staff for 15-20 hours per week, for a total of 560 hours. In addition to the fellow’s project, the fellow is required to attend relevant AMA meetings and may also assist in preparing briefs and presentations for the Litigation Center Executive Committee, research and write legal briefs outlining litigation strategies, and review and prepare amicus briefs and other legal pleadings. .

Applicants must be enrolled full-time in an ABA-accredited LLM program in health law and have outstanding academic credentials and research interests related to health law in areas such as public health law , national health care law and regulatory impacts on health, health and human rights. Successful candidates will have prior litigation or policy experience, and knowledge or experience in aspects of national health law and medical ethics.

The AMA Health Law Fellow will design a project to address the problem of under-enforcement of laws passed to protect patients, physicians, and public health. The Fellow will work with AMA staff to seek out gaps in compliance or enforcement of enacted state and federal laws with the goal of designing and implementing an advocacy strategy to reduce non-compliance and underperformance. -application. The project must promote WADA policy.

Possible topics could include:

  • Insurer compliance with network adequacy requirements under state law
  • Gaps in State and Federal Gun Laws
  • Enforcement of the Mental Health and Addictions Parity Act
  • Lack of Truth in Advertising Laws
  • Insurer and Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) compliance with state prohibitions on prior authorization for drug treatments
  • Federal and State Antitrust Enforcement and Compliance
  • Compliance with Medicaid eligibility determination and payment rules

The AMA Health Law Fellow will work as a member of the AMA Litigation Center, which is located within the Office of the General Counsel. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to build relationships within multiple WADA departments and build coalitions with key stakeholders outside of WADA.
